I am not a Catholic, but does anyone agree with me that the Pope’s visit and his particular attention to persons with disabilities during his appearances has helped to raise awareness? His simple moral authority in insisting that individuals with disabilities be given special place along his routes, and the time and attention he spent to bless each one, has served as a powerful reminder of the unique humanity of each and every human being, no matter what conditions he or she may bear.
Doubtless at the Pontiff’s insistence, his handlers planned the trip in such a way as to bring these individuals out into the open to experience an event firsthand. Too often I think our society likes to look away or ignore that individuals with disabilities exist among us, particularly individuals with severe disabilities. Thank you, Pope Francis, for being an example to us all of how to be a caring and genuine human being! I pray that the Pope Effect bears lasting results.
